Young Quins win Italy’s Montgomery Cup

Carmarthen Quins Under-15 Junior Rugby Team have won Italy’s Montgomery Cup during their tour to Northern Italy over the Easter weekend. The Quins Number 8, Tom Penney, 15 of Carmarthen and QE High School also picked up the Welsh Player of the Tournament prize.

The tournament is held in the Italian town of Oderzo to commemorate an English World War 1 Flying Ace, Kenneth Montgomery, who crashed his plane there in 1918. A former Rugby School pupil, who after being shot down during WWI refereed matches between prisons of war in the Northern Italian town. He was awarded the Italian Croce di Guerra for his services to Italy during this time. (www.rugbyoderzo.it). A decorated war hero, a photograph of his crashed plane appears on the label of the wine produced in the town.

During their tour the Quins also played in the Carwyn James International Rugby School Tournament. In conditions best described as muddy, the players needed just a 12 point victory to secure the cup. However, atrocious conditions and the older rivals told against the youngsters and the tournament as eventually won by the team who had succumbed to the Quins in the first round. “We had a fantastic experience and although we were disappointed not to have won the Carwyn James Easter cup, we were very pleased to have come home with the Montgomery cup”, said team captain, Siôn Beynon, 15, of Carmarthen and Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin. “The boys are very grateful to our coaches, parents and sponsors for enabling us to play in these two tournaments and we hope that they are all proud of our achievements”.

Mark Clement, who organised the tour said “Both of the hosting Italian Clubs gave us a huge welcome and it was truly an excellent cultural and sporting experience for the young players".

Linda Harries, who organised the fund-raising added "We are very grateful to all the sponsors for their generous support and to those who helped us raise the money for the boys to compete in two rugby competitions ”.

A full list of sponsors is available at www.quinsitalia.co.uk

The team won its semi-final round in the Carmarthenshire Cup beating Newcastle Emlyn by 38 – 0 last Sunday in Trimsaran. They will now face Felin Foel in the final on Sunday, 21 April. E N D S

What Next?

Now the tour is over we should decide what to do with this blog.
I will trickle out some thoughts and pictures over the next couple of weeks and it would be interesting if others (players and parents) could do the same. If you can't comment on the blog e-mail stuff to me and I'll post it ( editing rights reserved)
After that ....well we'll see what happens.
